Jake Hagopian has scorched to his 2nd win in 3 rounds when he took out a flag to flag feature during Round 3 of the Oval Express Formula 500 Super Series at Sungold Stadium last night.
Charlie Brown finished second with Matt Brown and Chad Sullivan rounding out the podium.
Hagopian was in sublime form throughout the night and in front of a capacity crowd set a new 20 Lap Record, smashing the old record set by Ben McLeod by just over 20 seconds. On a two lane racetrack the Hagopian was never challenged right from the very start and weaved his way through lapped traffic with ease.
Charlie Brown meanwhile held his nerve and was never headed during the course of the race to comfortably cross the line a quarter of a lap behind Hagopian. However Matt Brown and Sullivan put on a show for the crowd passing each other throughout the race while battling with lap traffic.
Current Australian Champion Liam Williams was next across the line finishing in 5th. AJ Blackstock continued his magnificent series with 6th while Leigh Van Ginneken, Thomas Davies, Stephen Ellement and Will Carroll rounded out the top 10.
Kristin Brown was next in 11th followed by Jye O’Keeffe, Austin Farley who put in a consistent night, Mitch Whiting, Dale Sinclair, Ben McLeod, Dylan Willsher, Mat Turner and Andrew Morton rounded out the field.
Like the last round, the B-Main was a torrid affair with multiple flips during the 15 lap race. James Aranyosi and Roy Urpeth both flipped on separate occasions with both drivers walking away. With Aranyosi’s flip the B-Main was declared 2 laps short with Jye O’Keeffe, Ben McLeod, Dylan Willsher, Jess Moulden, Mat Turner and Andy Morton all transferring to the back of the A-Main.
Hot conditions greeted the 37 competitors with 6 heat races taking place throughout the night. Charlie Brown took the opening heat race win after having a race long battle with Dale Sinclair. Hagopian charged into 3rd. Warrnambool native Will Carroll took the win in heat 2. He was followed by Grant Stansfield and Davies. Ellement edged out Matt Brown for the win in heat 3 with Turner completing the podium
Heat 4 saw Blackstock taking his 2nd heat win of the series. He led home Whiting and Willsher. Sullivan had his best heat run for the series with a win in heat 5. He was followed home by Kristin Brown and Hagopian. Williams took out the final heat of the night beating home McLeod and van Ginneken.
The series now takes a well earned day off with crews and drivers having some much needed down time to either repair damaged equipment or simply to relax. The next round of the series will take place on Tuesday 3rd January at Laang Speedway. Can Matt Brown Racing drivers Jake Hagopian and Matt Brown take another feature win or will the cash head somewhere else??? The only way to find out is to get your backside trackside. Hot laps will kick off at approximately 5.30pm with heat racing shortly after that.
