Liam Williams last night won a thrilling feature race in Round 6 of the Oval Express Formula 500 Super Series at Mid Western Speedway, Darlington.
Jake Hagopian had a race long battle with Charlie Brown for the minor placing and was able to pass Charlie for 2nd. Chad Sullivan finished in 4th.
Williams started 3rd in the 30 lap final and soon raced his way into 2nd behind Matt Brown. Brown was approaching lapped traffic with the top 5 all within 1 turn of each other when Williams pounced passing Brown in turn 3. With lapped traffic playing its part Charlie Brown passed Matt Brown in turn 2.
Charlie Brown was now applying the pressure on Matt Brown and was soon right behind him. With Williams now 3 lapped cars ahead the battle for the minor placings was heating up. With a lapped car in front of Matt Brown, Charlie seized the opportunity and made a pass in turn 2. As Charlie tried to pass Matt closed the door with Charlie driving over the front end of Matt Browns car.
With front end damage to Matt Brown, team mate Hagopian passed him and set his sights on Charlie Brown. Within a few laps Hagopian was able to pass Charlie Brown for 2nd and that’s where he stayed for the rest of the race. Sullivan meanwhile was able to pass Matt Brown with only a handful of laps left.
With the car running on the front rails, Matt Brown was able to hold on or 5th. Dale Sinclair had his best feature run of the series so far with a 6th place finish. Jye O’Keeffe faded to 7th after starting on the outside of the front row. Thomas Davies, AJ Blackstock and Mat Turner rounded out the top 10.
Jess Moulden salvaged some points after some poor heat races with an 11th place finish. Leigh Van Ginneken finished 12th. He was followed by Dale Shilleto, Brett Dillon, Shane Van Duynhoven, Dylan Willsher and Matt Higgs rounding out the finishers. Kristen Brown and Mitch Whiting finished on the infield.
Austin Farley transferred through the B-Main but was unable to make it out in time to start the A-Main. Gerrard Mabbitt was 2nd reserve but didn’t get the chance to start.
Turner won the B-Main ahead of Farley. Van Ginneken was next. He was followed by Davies, Higgs and Willsher. Brett Dillon was the first reserve and was able to start the A-Main due to Farley not starting. Mabbitt was 8th.
33 cars were in the pits on a cooler night compared to earlier in the series. 6 heat races were run. Matt Brown continued his domination with the opening heat win of the night. Charlie Brown and O’Keeffe completed the podium. Williams led the way in heat 2. Hagopian and Dale Sinclair rounded out the podium. Sullivan sped through the field after a restart to led Stephen Ellement and Van Duynhoven home in heat 3.
Heat 4 was taken out by a very happy Kristin Brown. Matt Brown and Williams rounded out the podium. Jye O’Keeffe took the penultament heat of the night. He led home Hagopian and Blackstock. The final heat race of the night was won by Dale Sinclair. Shilleto and Whiting completed the top 3.
The series now converges on the tight confines of Laang Speedway. Liam Williams won round 4 there and has shown some late series dominance. Can he win his 3rd feature of the series or will someone end the domination. The only way to find out is to get to Laang Speedway tonight. Hot Laps start at 5.30pm.
