Formula 500’s Sa Launch Speedway Australia Rookie Of The Year Championship

Formula 500’s South Australia are proud to announce the launch of its first ever 'Rookie of the Year Championship' in South Australia during season 2012 /2013.
The Championship will be supported by Speedway Australia.

Formula 500’s in South Australia are experiencing a boom in season 12/13, with around half a dozen new drivers entering the category to boost the local numbers. The influx of talent is a welcome addition to a number of new drivers that entered the category late last season.

The increase in competitors has made the Championship possible, along with the support from Speedway Australia and its Grass Roots Event Grant Scheme. Formula 500’s SA is proud to be associated with Speedway Australia and looks forward to working together to promote the category now and in the future.

Starting on October 6 at Murray Machining & Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway, the Championship will be held over six rounds, including rounds at Whyalla, Waikerie, Renmark, Bordertown and two at Murray Bridge. In addition to local competitors, some new interstate talent is expected to cross the border to contest the championship.

Already some contenders have begun their preparation. Setting the pace early has been Josh Michaelmore in the ex-Kym Gower Simex Engineering S96 Hyper. Josh has an impressive background in Dirt Karting, including multiple places in state titles. Josh sees his racing in Karts as the perfect preparation for Formula 500’s, which has been his goal for some time.

Also boasting an impressive background in Dirt Karts, including an Australian Championship and six SA and NT Titles, is Lisa Walker. Taking over driving duties in the Dave Graves-owned S4 Action Line Marking Pace Chassis, Lisa has impressed in practice sessions at Murray Bridge and Waikerie, and will be a strong championship contender.

Another young lady hitting the clay this year is Latisha Helyar in the S93 Captivation Gifts and Homewares, ex-Tim Hicks PACE Chassis. Latisha has speedway in her blood, with her father Dave a seasoned veteran in Modified Sedans. Latisha is looking forward to the challenge that formula 500’s bring.

With a large number of cars hitting the track in the category this year, the race within the race for the rookie of the year championship is expected to add extra spice come October 6 and throughout the season.
