Formula 500’s SA - Dungey gets revenge

After falling so close in taking the season opening feature win at Murray Bridge recently, Scott Dungey had his revenge when he powered to victory on Saturday at Murray Machining and Sheds, Murray Bridge speedway after out running Angelo Karoussis who finished second and Ross Miller racing to third.

17 cars were on hand including six contesting round two of the Speedway Australia Rookie of the year championship including formula 500 debutants Brad Batten in the s17 Clavell Family racing Pace and Swan Hill native and second generation driver Tyler Beasy in the v10 Racetec.

Heat one saw the current Australia three Brock Hallett race to the front quickly from the fourth starting position and was never headed on his way to victory. “The Whyalla Wizz” Angelo Karoussis made his way to second while veteran local Joe Mercorella chased down Chris Brooks in the s48 in the closing laps to finish third after starting ninth.

It was Scott Dungey opening his account with a win in the second heat ahead of Karoussis taking second again in heat two while Mercorella was having a solid run to again finish third.

The third heat proved to be a challenge, particularly for the rookies as the track started to dry out, still in sun light, while Brock Hallett again cruised to victory by nearly two seconds over Scott Dungey and Ross Miller in third while Josh Milchelmore and lisa Walker both completed spins late in the race on the tricky surface.

Feature time saw Hallett top qualify on pole ahead of Dungey, Karoussis and Brooks on a freshly prepared surface. After leading the opening Laps, Hallett pulled infield after the chain came a drift, whilst as the same time Lachlan Cates spun his s71 machine and was soon collected by the v10 of Beasy and finally rookie Latisha Helyar who then completed a wild series of flips in only her second formula 500 experience.

After the restart, the feature was virtually trouble free where Dungey went on to set the quickest race lap time on his way to victory with Karoussis second and a fast finishing Ross Miller third ahead of Josh Michelmore being the first rookie home in fourth.

Formula 500’s now have a week off before heading to Whyalla on November 24 for the Christmas Cup and Murray Bridge on December 8 for the King of the Bridge.
