Way back in 1974 a driver by name of John Andersson wrote his name into the record books as the first West Australian driver to ever win a national crown in Formula 500’s (Known as TQ Speedcars back then) and the first time the event had been staged in WA at the world renowned Claremont Speedway.
This also began West Australia’s dominance in the 70’s with no other state wearing the A1 again until 1980 when the great Max Dumesny (VIC) stepped up on top of the podium.
Max Dumesny also has the honour of being the only driver to take the A1 out of our state when the Australian Formula 500 title has been held in WA. This achievement occurring 31 years ago at the now closed Bibra Lake Speedway.
Since then WA drivers have greeted the chequered flag first on our home soil.
In 1987 Vince Chapman snatched the lead in the dying laps at Bibra Lake speedway.
In 1998 at Bunbury Speedway Trevor Harding Snr led all the way and in 2006 Ben Devlin wrote his name into the record books by becoming the first driver to win the event in a 600cc powered machine at Esperance speedway.
12-15th March 2014 (TBC) the Australian Formula 500 Title makes it’s way back to WA and will be held at the Perth Motorplex.
A total payout schedule in excess of $26,000 is proposed (TBC), with the winner receiving $10,000!!! The aim of Formula 500’s WA and the Perth Motorplex will be to make this the greatest Australian championship ever staged and the expectations are high for a 60+ car field. What better place to showcase our rich history and strong speedway division than the Perth Motorplex.
Can someone outside of WA join Max in history or will the home track advantage once again prove too much?
