Despite not recording a victory in the opening two rounds of the Tyrepower 600 Super Series for Formula 500s, Ryan Skennar has been a model of consistency, and it has rewarded him with the early point standings lead.
The opening two rounds have seen the victory spoils shared between two-time Australian Champion Mick Pronger and youngster Charlie Brown, but the consistency of Skennar has resulted in him finishing second on both occasions behind both Pronger and Brown.
At last weekend’s second round at Archerfield Speedway in Brisbane, the feature race was a blanket finish between the top-three placegetters. At the fall of the chequered flag, Brown, who had paced the field for the entire 15-lap distance, finished narrowly ahead of Skennar and Cody Maroske in second and third respectively. It was a quite busy weekend for Skennar, who the following day, flew up to North Queensland to run the Qld # 39 Davis Family-owned Formula 500 at Mareeba’s Kerribee Park Speedway. Kristin Brown finished just off the podium in fourth place ahead of Dan Scougall, Brenton Finney, Nicholas Hoffmans, Royce Harvey and Grant Harvey. Scott Farmer was the only driver in the feature race to not finish.
The heat-race wins were claimed by Maroske, Kristin Brown and Skennar. Other strong heat race performers were Charlie Brown, who finished second in all three heat races, and Scougall, who finished third in all three of the heat races.
Mick Pronger’s opening round performance at Archerfield Speedway was a comprehensive feature-race victory ahead of Skennar and Kristin Brown in second and third respectively. Bryn Upsall, Farmer, Royce Harvey, Finney and current Queensland Champion Nathan Pronger were the remaining finishers. Maroske was challenging for a podium spot up until he was involved in an accident with Pronger in the latter stages that resulted in the race being declared and Maroske recording a non-finish due to the damage sustained in the incident. Scougall and Daniel Welkie also failed to finish.
Earlier in the night, Charlie Brown had his night brought to a premature end, after crashing out of his second heat race and being unable to make the necessary repairs to complete the night. Heat-race wins went to Skennar, Mick Pronger and Nathan Pronger. Maroske, Kristin Brown and Scougall managed to achieve good results in their heat races.
After two completed Tyrepower 600 Super Series rounds, Skennar heads the point standings leader board.
The third round of the Tyrepower 600 Super Series will be fought out at Archerfield Speedway on Saturday night, November 23.
