Formula 500's SA - Dungey is crowned King

Strathalbyn's Scott Dungey drove his Coast Yamaha PMP to victory at Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway on Saturday the seventh of December and after coming so close in recent years and became the 2013 King of the Bridge Champion.

Dungey finished third two years ago and looked to have the race covered in last years event before having it snatched by Dylan Willsher on the last corner of the race, which made this years race unfinished business. The event taking on more significance as it is run in conjunction with the Tim Crouch memorial for speedcars. Crouch a close friend of Dungey's for many years. The reigning Murray Bridge track champion however was not in form going into the event and has struggling with a new engine package so far this season.

The night started out in a festive fashion with an open pit party before racing commenced, where drivers handed out posters and signed autographs as the public got up and close to the cars on display.

When racing got underway, the two drivers who were expected to fight for the title was Karoussis in the s27 and reigning King, Willsher in the v27. Karoussis was out early after losing an engine while leading heat one, while Willsher claimed second in his opening heat and looked on his way to being top points scorer during his second heat before riding the right rear of Victorian rookie, Ash Mc Donough in the v9. This would put Willsher deep into the pack going into the final where he drove well through the field to make it to a final fifth position.

Surprise packet of the night was young lady racer, Lisa Walker in the s46 Action Line marking Stallard. After two clean heats including a victory in heat two, Walker started the dash on the outside of the front row with Dungey taking high points and pole for the dash.

With the Scotchers Race Fuels pole award on the line, the start to the dash was a cracker with the two driving side by side around turn one, two before touching wheels down the back straight before Walker took the lead and driving to claim the dash and the pole for the feature, Dungey settling for second.

Its was a rematch going into the start of the twenty five lap feature but this time Dungey go the jump at the start. The race running cleaning before Ross Miller in the Yamaha World RTS made heavy contact with the turn two wall, with the reds coming on to help remove the injured Miller from the race track. After the restart Jye O'Keeffe in the G. J Gardner v55 also slipped by Walker and slotted into second.

From there, Dungey was never headed and finally after coming so close previously, became King, with O'Keeffe finishing second ahead of Walker while Josh Michelmore had a clean run to finish on the podium in forth, holding off Willsher.

After a successful 2013 King of the Bridge being conducted with major support by Speedway Australia, scotcher race fuels and KJR Designs, preparations are already underway for the 2014 edition
