Troy Johnson did what he had been threatening to do all season, when he claimed the win in the tenth annual Sprintcar Muster feature race for Formula 500's over last weekend. After a string of podium finishes this season, Johnson dominated the fifteen lap feature to take the win and in the process take the outright lead in the Perth Motorplex Track Championship after being tied in points with Jason Priolo after the night one preliminary feature.
Johnson led from the get go in the feature, despite being challenged early by Thomas Davies. He survived a number of restarts, the first coming when Aaron Fullgrabe found himself spinning in turn four, leaving Gavin Connelly nowhere to go but into his side and rolling over, eliminating both cars from the race.
Johnson led away before a three car spin involving Brooke- Louise Sharpe, Todd Broadwood and Matt Higgs bought out the yellows once more. Despite a tough restart that saw Davies and Andrew Priolo putting pressure on him, Johnson outlasted the duo, crossing the line ahead of Andrew Priolo and Davies.
"We got three from three tonight and we really didn't expect it" said Johnson from the podium. "It's just an awesome feeling and night!"
Indeed, Johnson was undefeated on the night, claiming the final heat of the weekend ahead of David Sinagra and Glenn Carstairs before claiming the A Dash to claim pole position for the feature ahead of Davies and Sinagra.
Jason Priolo, running the number four on his tail tank as well as Andrew Priolo and Brock Nanovich as a tribute to Matt Brown, still in hospital after last nights crash, won heat five ahead of Andrew and Adrian La Macchia, then went on to win the B Dash ahead of Andrew Priolo and Nanovich to set up a front row start for the feature alongside Johnston. Unfortunately for Jason, he suffered dramas as the field formed up for the feature and was make to take the green flag.
The Formulas now have the week to prepare for the next round of the West Coast Series to be held at Bunbury Speedway this Friday night. Stay tuned for all the latest updates in the coming weeks!
