Merrett Makes it 3! - Speedway Australia rookie of the year series Current points leader and Bordertown native, Patrick Merritt made it three wins from three rounds when he took victory in latest round of the Speedway Australia Rookie of the Year series for Formula 500's, driving his Bordertown pumps and refrigeration s64 Stallard at Speedway City on Saturday January 10.
Merritt quietly went about his business all night, while keeping out of trouble and picked up the full points to increase his lead in the rookie championship.
Opening his account for the series and gaining second on the night was Jason Norris in the Stevenson mechanical s26. Again, Norris ran faultlessly to gain valuable experience and points after attending previous rounds without the reward of points after failing to finish in previous features and lifts himself up to equal third in the points with young Victorian, Steven Van Ginneken.
Mt Gambier lady racer Steph Munn again was in the mix in her s44 Jimmy Tools machine, taking third in the points for the round, which has consolidated her spot as second in the championship. Steph has had a busy couple of weeks racing the Speedweek series and is recovering from injuries sustained in the closing rounds of that series. Steph having a quieter night with out any major issues.
Taking the feature win overall was young Victorian hot shoe, Dylan Willsher in the DW Motorcycle repairs, Dutchman Performance V27 Triple X chassis. Willsher had a comfortable lead over Whyalla resident Angelo Karoussis before Karoussis pulled infield and failed to finish.
This left Willsher with a third of a lap lead and looked home before a front radius rod came loose in the front end and all but stopped the flying Victorian as the rod dug into the clay and nearly stalled the car. Willsher gathered it up and proceeded to take the victory a head of Lisa walker in the Action Line Marking s46 and Lockie Cates in third in his s71 Ferris Metal Recyclers Triple X.
The teams now head to Waikerie this Saturday night for round four of the Speedway Australia Rookie of the year series.
