In news that will get the blood pumping for any speedway fan, we have had the biggest field ever nominated for the Catalyst Communication Pty Ltd 2014 Bunny Burrowes Memorial.
No less than fifty five drivers have nominated for the 32nd annual running of the event, to be held at Makit Hardware Narrogin Speedway on Sunday the 16th of March.
Bernard George Burrowes was a foundation member and life member of the PTQCC. He was a man who loved speedway and was a tough competitor in TQ's, respected by many and always playing by the rules. After retiring he worked hard behind the scenes, from set up to clean up, all because he enjoyed it. He commentated, worked on the program and completed plenty of other jobs until he passed away in the early 80's. He left a huge void which only after his passing did members fully appreciate what he had done. It didn't take long before the Bunny Burrowes Memorial was introduced to honour the man who did so much for so many.
Within the nominated fifty five car field are no less than twenty two eastern states drivers, a record for the division after four visiting drivers last year and eight in 2012. Interestingly, no eastern state driver has won the memorial race in its thirty one year history and this year is their best possibility of changing that statistic.
Rob Trewartha and Jye O'Keeffe are two of the nominated visitors who have made the trip over for the race a number of times, with Queenslander Charlie Brown, who came third in his first visit, returning for his second attempt after a year off. Rookie visitors include Australian Champion Marcus Kelly, former Australian Champion Brock Hallett and Queensland young gun Cody Maroske.
Leading the local nominations is defending champion Thomas Davies at his home track. Davies is in good form but will be challenged by other locals including state champion Andrew Priolo, the always fast 2009 winner Steven Ellement and Shane Andersson, still driving his dads tribute car in the race he finished fifth in last year.
There is a stack of other quality nominations and with a $10,000 prize pool including $5,000 to win, all the drivers are going to be racing very hard to ensure that they are on the top step of the podium come feature time. Adding some extra spice is the brand new right rear tyre thanks to Keenquip Race Gear to be awarded to the driver who records the fastest lap time in any race over the day.
Make sure you get your backside trackside on Sunday the 16th of March for what is sure to be the biggest Bunny Burrowes Memorial ever!
