Night one of the Washpod Australian Formula 500 Championship is now done and dusted and despite the small crowd in attendance, the action was every bit as good as expected.
Of the fifteen heat races contested, there were twelve different winners, with only Mark House, Defending Australian Champion Marcus Kelly and Troy Johnson all claiming two wins each. Courtesy of Mark's second place finish in his opening heat, he currently leads the overall points with 70, with Troy Johnson just three points behind after his two wins and a third while Andrew Priolo is in third on 62 points after a win a second and a third place.
Brendan Condren sits in fourth place after some good results while Queenslander Charlie Brown is the highest placed inter state competitor in fifth place. Reigning Australian Champion Marcus Kelly sits just behind him in sixth while the top ten is rounded out by Brock Hallett, Jason Priolo, Adrian Haywood and Craig Bottrell.
The opening heat saw Andrew Priolo race away to a good win over Steven Ellement and Hallett while heat two saw Jason Priolo grab the lead from early leader Mark House to claim the win while Jye O'Keefe was a solid third place,
Heat three saw Glenn Carstairs drive a lung buster of a race as he held off Jeremy Saffin and Troy Johnson who survived an earlier incident with David Sinagra to claim third. Heat four saw the yellows on again as Anton Porro and Brett Janssen made contact, with the yellows remaining on after the restart as Kristian Kelly suffered some dramas with his machine. In the end it was Brad Metcalfe who was the first to break the West Aussie stronghold on heat wins as he defeated the very impressive Adrian Haywood and Matt Higgs,
Heat five was a corker of a race as Tim Winters, Bronwyn Channing and Brendan Condren battled it out. Winters got a slight break on the other two, but Channing and Condren continued fighting it out wheel to wheel, with a Channing getting the best result in second and Condren in third. Heat six was the start of the second round of heats and Charlie Brown started well as he claimed the victory from Andrew Priolo and Chris Dymock.
Heat seven saw Mark House claim the first of his heat wins ahead of Victorian youngster Steven Van Ginneken and Condren while Marcus Kelly was all smiles as he claimed the win in heat eight ahead of Victorian duo James Aranyosi and Jye O'Keefe.
The ninth heat of the night was possibly the most controversial as a yellow light saw the field bunched up for a restart. Steven Ellement was deemed to have overlapped before the cone as the field went green once more and was to be penalised at the end of the race, but he worked his way into the lead and crossed the line first, making the rear of field penalty seem even more harsh. This handed the win to Craig Bottrell over Rob Trewartha and Jamie Pages. The final heat of the second round saw Troy Johnson claim his first win of the evening ahead of Hallett and Tyler Beasy.
The final round of heats kicked off with Johnson winning the second race in a row ahead of Cody Maroske and Adrian Haywood who was making some huge moves around the outside and impressing many in attendance for such a new Formula 500 driver. Heat twelve saw House claim another dominant win ahead of Charlie Brown and Andrew Priolo while heat thirteen went to Brendan Condren ahead of Jason Priolo and Todd Broadwood.
Heat fourteen saw Marcus Kelly claim his second win of the night after good battle with his mate Kristian Kelly while Hallett came in third. The final heat of the night saw Adrian La Macchia setting himself up for night two in the best possible way as he claimed the win from Kristin Brown and Chris Dymock.
The Formula division put on some great racing throu out the night with minimal stoppages and very little damage to anyone's cars. It is a real credit to the standard of the entire division and surely tomorrows action will be even better!
