In somewhat of a surprise result, rookie Formula 500 racer Adrian La Macchia is sitting atop the points tree after the completion of Night One of the WA Formula 500 Championship.
La Macchia raced solidly all night, getting better as he hit the track each time to record two second place finishes before winning his final heat in a hard fought race.
Victorian James Aranyosi currently sits in second place just six points behind La Macchia after also claiming a heat win, followed up by two third placings. Another Victorian, this time Jye O'Keefe, sits equal in third after claiming a first, a second and a fourth, tied on points with former WA Champion Steven Ellement who claimed two seconds and a third.
Shane Andersson put in an impressive performance to claim a seventh and two wins to be sitting in fifth place, and was in fact the only driver to record two wins. The top ten on points is rounded out by Dale Sinclair, Mark House, Bronwyn Channing, Thomas Davies and Kaydon Iverson.
With the twelve heats run and won there were eleven different winners, with Shane Andersson being the only to greet the chequers first on more than one occasion. Newly crowned Australian Champion Brock Hallet claimed the opener, while heat two went to O'Keefe. The third heat saw the red lights come on after Tyler Beasy went straight into the concrete wall, significantly damaging his car and more than likely bringing his West Australian tour to an early finish. Comeback kid Cody Turrachio claimed the heat win while James Aranyosi was the final winner in the opening round.
Heat five saw local hero Graham Terry claim the win, a nice reward for opening his workshop to visiting drivers this weekend, while heats six and seven went to two interstate invaders in Dale Sinclair and Brad Metcalfe. Shane Andersson took out the last heat of round two and the first heat of round three, while Ash Kent grabbed the win in heat ten. Heat eleven saw La Macchia grab his win while the final heat was taken out by Dylan Wllsher.
Action continues tomorrow night at Kalgoorlie Speedway and will see the final heats before the main events and we will crown a new champion! There's still a lot of questions to be answered so make sure you stay tuned!
