To say that Billy Foyle was impressive on his way to achieving a podium finish in last weekend’s Australian Formula 500 Title at Rockhampton Speedway would be a large understatement.
With less than 20 race meetings under his belt in a Formula 500, Foyle, a former Go Karter on the tar circuits, managed to qualify third and then finish there in the Australian Title deciding feature race.
For the 17-year-old Foyle, he was thrilled to come away from the country’s biggest Formula 500 event with a podium finish.
“To be honest, if someone had said to me at the beginning of the weekend I was going to finish on the podium in the Australian Title, I would’ve said they were crazy,” commented Foyle, who last season (his debut season) was the Formula 500 track champion for both Cairns Speedway and Mareeba Speedway, as well as the combined champion for both tracks.
“I was quick from the beginning of the weekend in practice and was able to build on that, and by the time the feature race came around I was confident of being able to hold my own, so to come away with away with a podium finish was such an amazing achievement.”
Foyle said that switching to a new D1 chassis from Driven Performance (USA) late last year has seen improved results.
“Towards the end of last year, I moved into a D1, and straight away I was on the pace,” Foyle said, who in his opening two race meetings – Cairns Speedway and Archerfield Speedway – he had scored feature-race wins aboard his new car.
“We have had a good run in the D1, but we have faced some hurdles with it as we try and get a better handle of the car for the different track conditions – which will come with more track time.
“The turning point for the team with the car came at the Queensland Title a few weeks ago when I achieved a top-five finish, and that lifted my confidence heading into the Australian Title.”
In terms of the future, Foyle plans to race the remainder of the 2014-15 season at Archerfield Speedway. From there, he will compete at Cairns Speedway during the off season and then hopefully contest the entire Tyrepower 600 Super Series, as well as the Victorian Speedweek Series, in the 2015-16 season.
Foyle’s next appearance will be on the Saturday night of April 18 at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway for the penultimate round of the Tyrepower 600 Super Series.
Foyle would like to thank Reedman Industries in Cairns, Tony Van Ginneken from Dutchman Performance and Peter Lack from GW Racing (Bilstein Shocks and American Racing Tires), for their 2014-15 season support.
