For the first time since the WA State Title last month, the Formula 500’s will hit the track this weekend in what will be the final event of the summer season. Before the winter season kicks in with PTQCC events, including the annual and prestigious Bunny Burrowes Memorial, there is business to attend to with the final event of the season. The event, held at the Perth Motorplex, will be the Gold Cup Grand Finale and it will also double as the final round of the season long, ten round Perth Motorplex Track Championship. Coming into the weekend it is new West Australian Champion Tom Hooper who is in the box seat to make the 2014/15 season his best ever as he leads the points by twenty markers over second placed Troy Johnson. The two have gone at it tooth and nails all season and we are sure to have a thrilling finish this Saturday night. Third place in the championship, Adrian Haywood, will unfortunately drop down the point standings as he is not able to contest the final round, but fortunately for his nearest rivals in Luke Nardini, Chris Dymock and Jamie Nardini it paves the way for them to finish higher in the points. Mathematically speaking any of the top ten could win, but this relies on most competitors not showing up, and looking at the nomination list of twenty cars, that shouldn’t happen, so Hooper and Johnson will fight it out, with Luke Nardini looking to consolidate third place. All will be looking for a strong run in the feature race, with 300 points on offer for the win. Drivers the ilk of Mark House, Andrew Priolo and Steven Ellement, while not in the Championship race, are all experienced competitors at the Motorplex and know what it takes to win. They will be pulling out all stops to rain on the championship parade and it would be no surprise to see any of them finishing on the top step of the podium. Gavin Connelly, David Sinagra and Jeff Ross all practiced on Wednesday night and looked very quick, so they will be hoping to use the knowledge gained from the extra laps and apply it to their racing this Saturday night, while others such as Jeremy Saffin, Cameron McKenzie and Kieran Chapman have been consistently quick at each meeting they contested, so they too will be looking to throw a spanner in the works. This is the last summer meeting for the Formula’s before a big winter season kicks off, so make sure you are at the Perth Motorplex this weekend for what is sure to be yet another great show from the pocket rockets!
