Formula 500's Behind the Business: Beasy Motorsport

The Beasy family have had a long association with the Formula 500s – something like three decades. With a passion for the Formula 500 class, they were earlier this year excited to become the Australian importers for the BOSS Chassis.

Based in the regional Victorian town of Swan Hill, the Beasy family’s speedway passion started in the 1980s, with Gary Beasy starting in Formula 500s. Following Beasy’s retirement from Formula 500s in the late 1990s, the family stepped away from active competition. A decade later, the Beasy family returned to the track with Tyler beginning in Junior Sedans, and then the family moved into the VSC Formula 500 class, which is basically older model Formula 500s from the 1980s and 1990s, with Gary getting back behind the wheel, followed by his two sons, Todd and Tyler, joining him a couple of years later.

Two years ago, the family returned to Formula 500s, with Tyler continuing their legacy in the class as their driver. After running another brand of chassis for the first two seasons, which included the highlight of finishing second in last season’s NSW Title at Gunnedah Speedway, Tyler made the switch to the BOSS Chassis for this season, and he hasn’t looked back. Joining Tyler in what is a two-car team this season is Warrnambool’s Ash Sinclair, who runs the team’s sister BOSS Chassis.

“It’s great to have a driver like Ash onboard with our team this season,” Beasy Motorsports Todd Beasy enthused.

“Ash has been one of Victoria’s fastest competitors in recent seasons and we’re looking forward to helping him continue that form this season running the BOSS Chassis.”

Earlier this year, the Beasy Motorsport team became the Australian distributors for the Formula 500 BOSS Chassis. With currently only two BOSS Chassis’ in the country, they are looking to bring import more – sooner rather than later. However, at the moment, it’s all about building their profile.

“At this early stage, it’s all about making our mark in the Australian market with a high-quality Formula 500,” commented Todd Beasy.

“Apart from the car itself, another key is matching a quality product with a quality service, because if you can’t back up a great product with a great service then you aren’t doing yourself or your clients’ justice.”

In a short period, two years, the BOSS Chassis is already making an impact. BOSS Chassis is the brainchild of Ken and Austin Brown and Flea Ruzic. Ruzic and Austin Brown have been racing together as a team for quite a few years now, with Ruzic turning the wrenches and Brown doing the driving. They’ve been racing for about nine years now and couldn't get the cars to do what they wanted without creating another problem. By the end of year 2013, they had decided to develop their own chassis. It started out by just fixing the problems they had with the standard chassis. Later on, they started developing some new geometry designs to the car and tested them at the track. A lot of them would go unseen unless you knew where to look. Most of the problems that they fixed were the same ones that most others seemed to have. So the cars took off really well. They work, race and maintain all of the cars they build.

The BOSS Chassis team aren’t just building the chassis and selling them, like most manufactures. If they see a problem or something that could be better on a car, then they fix it and apply it to the new cars they build and sell. Another advantage is having a mastermind like Ruzic behind the deal. The Browns believe he can fix, build, and fabricate pretty much something out of nothing. Not every customer wants the same thing – what works for one may not work for another. So, if the customer wants a one-off car that no one else has, they can build it. Brown and Ruzic ultimately wanted to build cars that are capable of consistently winning races on any type of track.

To showcase the versatility of their products, the BOSS Chassis team got together with POWRi Champion driver Dereck King in the Micro Sprints. He has done a great job with winning many races in the car, along with helping them improve the Micro Sprint chassis. This year, BOSS Chassis teamed up with Darren Hagen to drive one of their Midgets. They managed to exceed their own expectations by winning this year’s POWRi National Midget Championship. Along with four POWRi A main wins, Hagen also captured the Kokomo Grand Prix with the USAC Midget Series. At the end of this year’s racing season, they teamed up with the current POWRi Micro Sprint Champion Nathan Benson. He has worked with Brown and Ruzic to develop another Micro Sprint chassis. This way, they can market themselves to every type of customer. The new Micro Sprint chassis will debut at the Tulsa Shootout in the beginning of January next year. They are looking forward to working with Nathan and showing what these cars are capable of. Overall, they’re pleased with the strides they’ve made in only two years of building these cars. They’re also excited to see what we can do next as they continue to develop and improve their products.

Since taking on the Australian distributor for the Formula 500 BOSS Chassis, the Beasy family have received a lot support from the team at the BOSS Chassis headquarters.

“The guys at BOSS Chassis have been great supporters since we became dealers by sharing their knowledge and offering a lot of advice,” Beasy said.

“One of the most exciting aspects about working with BOSS Chassis is their desire to develop and improve their products in both Micro Sprints and Midgets. They are not ones to rest on their laurels, and in speedway, it’s certainly not the game to do that because the sport is constantly evolving.”

None of this is possible for Beasy Motorsport without the help from their amazing supporters: Boss Chassis, KBR performance, Mallee Windscreen Service, Mahers Glassworks, Voyage Fitness, Bikes and Trikes, Wings n Things, Aranyosi Designs/ Clutz Creative, Showtime Signs, Momos Racing Engines, Repco, Swan Hill Suzuki, Morpeth Farms, Chris Conlan Electrical, Snap On, Caars Smash Repairs, Country Tracks, Elite Shock Services/Infinity Shocks, Choices Flooring, and Todd Beasy Building.
