Adrian Haywood has tonight celebrated the holiday season in near perfect fashion as he claimed a heat win en route to claiming the feature win the in the Christmas Cup at the Perth Motorplex. Haywood was the second highest point scorer courtesy of his heat win and a fifth place, which started him on the front row alongside high points man Troy Johnson, who had a win and a fourth place in the heats. The man they call ‘Muscles’ was quickly into the lead, with Johnson settling into second behind him while Chris Dymock made a big move to challenge the leading duo but ultimately settled into the third place on track. After an opening lap caution for a few cars who came together, the race was able to continue with Haywood racing away. Behind them were battles throughout the field while former national champion Matt Brown was struggling with issues after an earlier roll over that saw him start near the rear of the field in the feature, charge forward, slow and head infield, return to the track and charge through again to head infield once more. Tom Hooper had an uncharacteristically bad night and was next to bring out the cautions as he spun with David Carstairs, but it didn’t make a lot of difference up front as Haywood continued to lead Johnson. Behind them it was Luke Nardini making the big moves, managing to pass Dymock for third in the dying stages, rounding out the podium as the race came to an end behind the victorious Haywood and second placed Johnson. Earlier in the night the opening heat saw four and five wide action that ultimately resulted in Matt Brown being punted, spinning and going upside down in a big way. Matt repaired the car for the next race, while Haywood went on to win the opener. The second heat saw Troy Johnson lead from green to chequers in a dominant performance. The Formula 500’s will continue their busy next few weeks as they return to the Perth Motorplex on the 26th of December for the Boxing Day Bonanza, while that will quickly be followed up by the Sprintcar Muster at the same venue in the New Year. Until then, the WA Formula 500 Association would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas!
