Formula 500's WA McKenzie Grabs Bunbury Win!

Cameron McKenzie last weekend claimed his best result of season 2015/16 as he raced away to victory in the fifth round of the West Coast Series at Bunbury Speedway.
McKenzie had a dominant night, claiming the two heat wins to start from pole position in the feature, then going on to lead every lap and claim a strong win by just under two seconds.
He started on the front row with Ashleigh Oldfield, but it was Craig Bottrell, driving the Matt Brown #4 machine who would quickly make his way into second, a position he too would not relinquish throughout the twelve lap feature distance.
Behind the leading duo was a good battle between Ryan Higgs and Troy Johnson for third, with Higgs holding the position for the first few laps before Johnson made a great pass, with Johnson coming home in third place at the chequers behind winner McKenzie and second placed Bottrell.
Unfortunately, as this happened, there was an incident between a couple of cars, that ended with Ben Stockdale going upside down hard, requiring medical attention. We wish Ben all the best in his recovery.
Meanwhile, it had already been a rough and tumble night, with Bill Richards the first to go upside down in turn four of the opening heat. He was able to repair the car anf continue competing in the final tworaces of the night, but the same couldn’t be said for newly crowned WA Champion Thomas Davies, who rode the wheel of another competitor as they attempted to avoid an incident in front of them, leaving Davies going headlong into the wall and destroying the title winning car.
Davies now faces a race against time to get the car ready for the upcoming Australian Titles in Gunnedah, NSW.
Courtesy of his win, McKenzie has been able to close the gap to Davies in the overall West Coast Series points standings, with Davies now leading by just thirty seven markers. Ashleigh Oldfield has moved into third place overall, while Brent Lockwood and Bill Richards now round out the top five in the series so far.
The Formula 500’s in Western Australia now have a short break for the Australian Title, before the action resumes here at the Perth Motorplex on the 9th of March.
All the best to the WA teams heading over to the Australian Title and fingers crossed they can bing the #1 back to the west!
