F500 - Williams Triumphs, As Newcomers Impress

Fresh from capturing his second Australian Formula 500s Title win last weekend at Gunnedah Speedway in country NSW, Liam Williams has managed to come out on top in last Friday night’s Easter Formula 500 Double Header opener at Toowoomba’s Hi-Tec Oils Speedway, but two newcomers in the form of Ryan McNamara and Piper Ogilvie impressed.
After winning two out of his heat races earlier in the night, Williams, aboard the Aus # 1 Jim Muir-owned machine, started the feature race from pole position. Williams was able to continue his great form on the night and blasted to the lead from the drop of the green flag. Once out in front, Williams was able to pace the field for the entire 20-lap distance and come away with a comfortable victory at the fall of the chequered flag.
For Williams, this was his third victory in Queensland of the current season. This isn’t a bad strike rate, especially considering that Williams and his car owner, Jim Muir, joined forces just after the Christmas-New Year period.
While Williams showed his class out in front, there were two drivers with less than 12 months of Formula 500 experience – McNamara and Ogilvie – who showed plenty of fight. McNamara drove strongly all night and was rewarded with a second-place finish, while Ogilvie showed her improved speed and completed the podium in third. For both McNamara and Ogilvie, these performances have boosted their confidence to no end. They both showed their progression as drivers in what are the first full seasons in the class for both drivers.
James Kennedy once again missed out on that elusive podium in fourth. Kennedy finished ahead of current Queensland Champion and newly-crowned Australia # 2 Kaydon Iverson, Kristin Brown, Tristan Johnson, Brad Van Elswyk, Graham Williams, Phill Roberts, Alan Iverson, Adrian Farrell, Royce Harvey and the final finisher Grant Harvey in 14th.
Earlier in the night, Williams (x 2) and Kennedy were the three heat-race winners.
The second and final night of the Easter Formula 500 Double Header was fought out the following night at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway; however, the feature race was unable to be run, due to wet weather. Prior to the feature race, the heat-race action resulted in wins being shared between Ryan Skennar and Ryan McNamara.
The KRE F500 Championship Series will resume with the 11th round to be held at Archerfield Speedway on the Saturday night of April 9.
