John Andersson was inducted into the Speedway Hall Of Fame (the first Formula 500 member to be included in this prestige’s group of Speedway people)
West Australian John Andersson typifies all that is good about grassroots speedway in Australia. He raced Formula 500’s for 50 years from 1956 to 2006, and is still active in the sport today as an official and pitcrew member.
John was first West Australian to win an Australian Title in any car division, he was the 1974, 1975, 1977 Australian Formula 500 champion, placed second in the Australian Title three times and third five times. He was also a six times West Australian State champion from 1968 to 1980.
John won a grand total of 67 Feature Races at Claremont Speedway from 1958 to 1994, more than double the next best of 31. He was still competitive late in his career, winning the Perth Motorplex Formula 500 track Championship at the age of 63 in 2003.
John is currently a scrutineer for the West Australian Formula 500 Association and has held many executive positions on the Western Australia Formula 500 Association committee throughout the years. When not scrutineering John is crewing for his son Shane who has also raced for 25 years, currently in the Formula 500 class.
