Coming off a victory the previous weekend at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway, Liam Williams again showed his class by winning the opening round of the KRE F500 Championship Series at Toowoomba’s Hi-Tec Oils Speedway last Saturday night but he certainly did it the hard way.
Starting from pole position for the 15-lap feature race, the current and two-time Australian Champion snatched the lead early from Nathan Pronger, only to fall victim to the rough track surface, spinning out on lap four and then consequently having to restart at the rear of the field. Williams mounted a strong charge back to the front running the highline and managed to move up into second place with five laps to go. On lap 13, he took the lead from newly-crowned NT Title holder and defending KRE F500 Championship Series Champion Kaydon Iverson and held on to it until the fall of the chequered flag.
Just losing out to Williams in the closing stages of the race was Iverson, who put in a strong effort to finish in the runner-up spot, after starting the feature race from position five in the field and taking the lead on lap seven. Pronger completed the podium in third after an up and down battle for first and second with Williams and Iverson.
The top five was completed by James Kennedy and Ryan McNamara, with Bryn Upshall, Kristin Brown, Tomas Partington, Phill Roberts, Sydney-based visitor Sean Barnett, Lismore’s Ethan Eyears, Brad Vee, Vicki Canfield and Adrian Farrell rounded out the finishers.
Glen Douglas, Royce Harvey and Tristan Johnson were unable to complete the feature race.
Earlier in the night, Williams showed his pace, winning both of his heat races, while the remaining two heat races were awarded to Johnson and Iverson. Pronger also showed his consistency, finishing second behind Johnson and Iverson in his two heat races.
The next round of the KRE F500 Championship Series will be on the Saturday night of October 15 at Archerfield Speedway, where Williams will no doubt be aiming to score a hat-trick of wins.
