In front of a great crowd at the Make Smoking History Bunbury Speedway, the Formula 500’s made their triumphant return and in a night that had a bit of everything, it was Matt Brown who bounced back from a rough night at the last round of the Fuel Distributors of WA West Coast Series to claim the win in what was Round Six of the series.
Fourteen cars would start the feature with just Craig Noakes unable to make the call, drivers getting the opportunity to race on a freshly prepared track that would give them the best possible chance of a good race.
After a pole shuffle with plenty of feeling, Cody Turacchio and Matt Brown would share the front row for the feature and the duo picked up right where they left off in the Shuffle event.
Unfortunately it all ended in tears very quickly as Turacchio and Brown moved up track together on the initial start, State Champion Steven Ellement left with nowhere to go as he was making a run on the outside, riding a wheel, hitting the fence and rolling over.
The restart saw Brown and Chris Dymock now on the front row as Turacchio was sent to the rear for his part in the incident, Brown getting the jump and beginning to race awaywhile Dymock and Brendon Marshman settled into second and third respectively.
Brown was in lapped traffic by lap four but it didn’t slow him down, with Dymockwatching from afar, while Marshman too was well behind Dymock. George Eaton would be in fourth at this point while Turacchio had quickly madehis way back through the pack into fifth.
By the halfway distance Brown would be nearly six seconds ahead as Marshman closed on Dymock, looking for a way through in traffic.
Within the next few laps positions two through to five were running closely on the track, Turacchio grabbing fourth on lap fourteen, but Eaton would fight back and reclaim the position the very next lap, the two making slight contact but continuing on.
This battle allowed Marshman again to pull away in third as Dymock too had rebuilt his gap, but up front Brown had a massive lead, crossing the line nearly twelve seconds ahead to take a strong win ahead of Dymock, with Marshman in third.
Making the night even more exciting was the fact that Brown played his Ace Card, doubling his points for the round in what is sure to see him rocket up the series standings. The Flying Formula 500’s will next be in action at the Perth Motorplex this Friday, the 21st of February, again supporting World Series Sprintcars, and providing us with a huge opportunity to again showcase our division!
